l'originalite . . .

“Later in the same letter [Mozart] says, ‘Why my productions take from my hand that particular form and style that makes them Mozartish, and different from the works of other composers, is probably owing to the same cause which renders my nose so large or so aquiline, or in short, makes it Mozart’s, and different from those of other people. For I really do not study or aim at any originality.’ Suppose Mozart had tried to be original? It would have been like a man at the North Pole trying to walk north, and this is true of all the rest of us. Striving after originality takes you far away from your true self, and makes your work mediocre.” --Keith Johnstone

Hmmmm, I have nothing original to say to that. But it is very true.

Yeah, that's how I feel when I read it.

Sometimes it is pretty hard work just being myself anyway (I mean that in the most non-alternativerocksonglyric way possible).

hi, never read your blog before, and i don't think i know you, but the mozart picture caught my attention, so i read the rest of your posts. it's funny because i have been seeing mozart references everywhere lately. but i suppose that's no coincidence because this year is his 250th, and in reference to Gerald's discussion on greatness: i consider mozart to be one of the few musical geniuses.

i liked your musings about life-reversal. and i tried free-writing again after a long hiatus and was just as pissed as the last time i tried it. i can't do it.
