There and Back Again

Here is something no one has ever talked about before:

I just watched Fellowship of the Ring again. Everytime I watch LOTR, I always think about the casting because I have carried my own interpretation of the LOTR characters in my head for years (just like you and your weird uncle). On the whole I am happy with the casting, but there are definitely a few weak links. Here are some suggestions for improving the LOTR casting.

1. Get Viggo out of there. He does not sound like Aragorn. Possible sub? Josh Holloway (Sawyer from lost) without the southern accent (he does not sound like Aragorn).

2. Hugo Weaving as Elrond was an "oopsie daisy". He was way too emotional in a non-empathetic way (un-elflike) and as you have observed while making a witty comment to your friends, he is still Agent Smith. Sub? Johnny Depp (just a gut feeling, seriously).

3. Orlando Bloom was OK, but he should have quit acting in films right after The Return of the King.

4. George W. Bush as Gollum. I had to say one funny one just to get it out of my system.

I am also curious to know what you and your weird uncle think, so comment at will.

Viggo needs to go. That was a terrible decision to cast him as Aragorn. I don't know Josh Holloway, but we could probably do a lot worse than him - Michael Moore, for example. or Regis.

I don't know why, but I always imagined Elrond as a sort of Sam Neill. Much better than Agent Smith. At least Keanu was nowhere to be seen.

Liv Tyler was ok as Arwen, but she weaseled her way in to far too many scenes.

My weird uncle agrees with me on all of this, except he was really hoping to see Jon Lithgow as Gandalf. He's really wrong on that one, though.

Okay. So I totally loved Viggo as Aragorn. But, as Adam pointed out to me, it took until the second movie. That's okay, I like character developement.

Elrond, I haven't met anyone who likes Hugo Weaving as Elrond. I hated him as Elrond. I think that Jeremy Irons would have done a great job. Although, I love Jeremy Irons, so I probably would have liked him even if he played Arwen.

Also love Orlando Bloom. For obvious reasons. Nuff said. :)

I don't like Bernard Hill as Theoden. But I don't have any better ideas yet. You?

Hmmm . . . Theoden. Good question. I am not saying he's definitely the one, or how I found this picture but take a look at Robert Plant at www.askmen.com/men/entertainment_100/102_robert_plant.html

Jerry, at first I just read the Moore and Regis line, but then I actually thought about it. Long story short: I laughed out loud or lol.

I agree with your suggestions. Jonny Depp would have been awesome for Elrond, but maybe a little too awesome. Bill Nighy would have worked, maybe Anthony Hopkins.

Viggo is cool, but I pictured him more bad-ass. The guy who played Buliwyf on the Thirteenth Warrior would have been cool.

Gandalf was a perfect cast.

Gimli was another good cast.

And yes, I remember the song you played me over summer trip. I wish I could hear it again.
